Diane Sawyer's report last Friday on this topic was a real eye-opener and heart wrenching too. The poverty, addiction and dysfunctional way the people live on a day to day basis, as well as the children portrayed (many taking care of addicted parents) brought tears to my eyes.
The second eye-opener was learning they call "mountain dew" soda "mountain milk" including putting it in baby bottles. The rotten teeth in the region is appalling. Pepsi did not care for Diane reporting that mountain dew has 50% more caffeine than other sodas and wrote her a letter she read on Good Morning America.
None the less, Pepsi teamed up with a kind dentist in the area (he took 100K of his own money, turned a semi into a traveling dental office) and will provide some needed help to fix as many smiles as possible. Way to go Pepsi!
But the truth is, soda is addicting, loaded with sugar and not good for us.
